The Masseria Torre Coccaro & Maizza
Coccaro means cock from the Greek word “Cocoros”, it was an old watchtower against the invasions of Saracens, ancient People from Turkey, actually Frederick the II of Svevia built a line of defence from Gargano to the tip of Santa Maria di Leuca with
every 3 km a watchtower, this was in 1550.
Eventually this fortified watchtower became a fortified farm where the pilgrims use to take refuge against the invasions, there is an image of Saint Mary on the main arched entrance that protects every pilgrim passing by, also at the entrance there is a
mulberry tree that gives the welcome to every pilgrim and was an heritage of the old Order of Malta Knights (like the Cross in the Church or the approx 300 hundred years Pomegranate tree symbol of fertility), usually every farm in the area has a mulberry
tree at the entrance.
Then it became a farm mostly for olive oil, this is actually the oldest part for olive trees in south of Italy, we have in the grounds many trees that have more than 700 years also because in this area we had the first settlements of the Benedictine priests that planted olive trees.
In the farm there is also a nice chapel from 1730 where the workers and the Marquis Palmieri (the owner of the Farm, an old family from Monopoli the richest Family in the area that also owned a magnificent Ancient Palace in the historic Centre of Monopoli) use to get married, baptized and funerals, we still use it for Masses.
In the church there are also some ex – voto such as an old shotgun that was put by a hunter whose gun exploded but he did not die. Also the church use to be home for pilgrim women that believed that this place gave fertility to them in order to have children.
Also in the farm they use to have olive mills in the underground caves, Also the animals like sheeps, horses and cattle used these caves as underground stables.
Together with the animals slept also the workers of the farm, they slept with the animals and the olive oil because they were scared of being robbed.
Now in these caves we placed a beautiful SPA Aveda with indoor pool, jacuzzi, turkish bath and fitness room, we also have a special room: the orange garden suite which is placed in antique cave with a lounge, jacuzzi and a beautiful 200 mt orange garden
with a private pool.
also in the farm there is a beautiful orchard where you can walk under an antique colonnade amongst vegetables, figs, under a very old vine pergola and relax under an olive tree, this area was the old quarry were they used to cut the limestone to build
the Masseria.
My family has been in hotel business since 1975, we have two other hotels in the area, one is a 150 rooms hotel on the beach with Mediterranean style furniture, the other is an hotel near Alberobello in the “trulli” region 124 rooms with a very nice
park, we also had an hotel in Scotland from 1994 to 2002, it was an old manor house near Edinburgh in the middle of countryside were we used to take clients out for golfing, fishing and other sporting activities.
Maasseria Torre Coccaro opened in 2003 MASSERIA TORRE MAIZZA
A similar property to masseria coccaro was also anciently owned by Palmieri Family, then the owner was a Countess from Fasano Miss Colucci that owned more than 12 masserias, Giorgio armani wanted to buy the property but she decided to sell even at a lower price to a local person so that we were going to employ local people and keep the masseria alive instead of using it only a few weeks a year.
Masseria maizza is surrounded by a golf course and vegetable farm estate with more than 1000 years old olive trees. We have an artist in residence project since 2003 with more than 20 site specific art installation all around the estate masseriaartproject.it , Movies under the stars projections during the summer on
our sunset bar overlooking the sea. Coccaro jazz a festival with the most important jazz artists in Europe with live concerts.
Special guests in the masserias: Miuccia Prada after doing a beautiful journey from milan to puglia all through Italy on a 1970 rolls Royce convertible used to play scopone scientifico all day under the pergola of our orange garden. Also at the masserias: charlotte gainsbourg, eric cantona, jean dujardind, victoire de castellane, Roberto cavalla, angela missoni, alberto marras that loved our thai massage girl, willem Dafoe, Darryl Hannah, Federica Pellegrini, Flavia Pennetta, Valeria Golino, Riccardo Scamarcio.

Evening Beach dinner: In our coccaro beach club luxury restaurant on the beach, live music, sushi and raw fish bar, tapas, drink bar, barbecued fish and crustaceans, paella and dessert buffet.

Galà Dinner : first a cocktail in pur Maroc terrace overlooking the sea and then Enjoy our beautiful Masseria Maizza restaurant overlooking an old orange garden, around the pool, with candles and torches. Featuring creative gourmet cuisine with an “After Party” in the olive mill. (min. 20 pax) 70’s Disco Party: Includes rental of costumes, wigs, pants and tie-die shirts for everyone.
From (min. 20 pax Village Country Feast: Includes hay bales, candles and torches in the main square of the Masseria Torre Coccaro. Unique homemade pasta making, a wood-burning oven for pizza and calzones, and stations including: mozzarella making, olive and lupini bean, shrimp tempura, salami and cheese. Watch local folk dancers in the square followed by candlelight dinner in the old olive mill with dancing afterwards.

Our Famous Barmen Camillo and Natale with vast international experience and winners of many prices will teach you how to make all the classic cocktails (negroni, martini, mojjitos etc.) so that you can entertain your friends whenever you organize evenings for them, they will share all the special tips with you and also teach you a few new trendy cocktails. Two Hour Cooking School: Visit the local vegetable and fish market in the historic center of town, with ice cream tasting followed by cooking hands-on with our chefs. Then enjoy eating the result of your cooking. Also available a sushi and raw fish lesson with our Sushi Master You can also have a competition with 3 – 4 teams. Each team will preparing one course of:
appetizer, pasta, main course or dessert. A jury will then give the trophies for best and worst categories. Euro 60 pp
Walking Tours. A guide will tour you through the Italian countryside. You will stop at a mozzarella farmhouse where you will see how the locals make mozzarella and burrata (cottage cheese mozzarella). You will also be able to taste the fresh extra virgin olive oil while stopping at the Museum of Olive Oil.

Gourmet Countryside Bicycle Tour – A guide will tour you through the Italian countryside. You will stop at a mozzarella farmhouse where you will see how the locals make mozzarella and burrata (cottage cheese mozzarella). You will also be able to taste the fresh extra virgin olive oil while stopping at the Museum of Olive Oil. and then to a fishermen place for raw fish carpaccio,
