He is always on the move, often with a partner, very attentive to the quality of services. Under the guide of the interior designer Giò Pozzi and the entrepreneur Nadia Galeotti the interiors of the 13 cosy rooms, each one different from the other and distributed on 4 floors, present a minimalist collection of tones and materials: grey in the choice of flooring with large and precious slabs, rope for the old linens coming from France and grey-brown for the wooden floors, with light hues for the made-to-measure design furnishings.
GombitHotel offers a unique welcoming, not only because of the possibility of plunging oneself into a refined and contemporary space guarded within the walls that have lived through history, but also for the unique service, created to measure for the guest along with the comfort of high technology. “The economic crisis and the subsequent fall in consumer confidence” – explains the entrepreneur Nadia Galeotti, – “cannot become an alibi for inactivity. On the contrary they must represent a powerful stimulus to activate the best resources in every field. Faced with the contraction of tourism recorded over the last 24 months, we analysed the sector, studied Italian and European experience and focussed on the strengths of our territory represented, for instance, by our artists or by having restored a historical monument of the town, becoming ingredients of this new made-to-measure recipe of a tourist market that never stops, a market in continual change”.
An approach that confirms Italian hard work. Not by chance, in an Italy that, despite the crisis remains at the top of the list of the most desired foreign travel destinations (analysis 2009 Unioncamere–Isnart), Bergamo, with 1,656,491 tourists in 12 months (Annual Report of the Tourist Observatory of the Province of Bergamo) in the last decade has recorded an exceptional growth in tourist movements brought about mainly by the airport of Orio al Serio.

HISTORY OF AN ANCIENT BUILDING
In the heart of Bergamo Alta
GombitHotel has a privileged location in a tower from the medieval epoch, the Torre del Gombito, built for defensive purposes at the start of the thirteenth century.
The Torre is situated at the ancient meeting point of two Roman roads: the cardo (cardoon) and the decumano (decumanus). From this crossroad, named compitum, intersection, crossroad, derives the name of the tower: Gombito, “gombet”, in dialect, elbow in Italian.
The tower kept its defensive function until the sixteenth century, when it was converted for civilian uses.
In the following centuries the tower had alternating luck, but was the protagonist in 1849 of the Risorgimento movements that also affected Bergamo: from its summit, the citizens who were in revolt fired on the tower of the Rocca, guarded by the Austrian troops, who responded threatening the partial demolishing of the ancient tower.
In 1877 the tower belonging to the gentlemen Alessandro Agliardi, Giovanni Arioli and Giovanni Gout, was donated to the Municipality of Bergamo.
Even outside the Torre one breathes a little history all around: at its base an ancient washing trough and a little further on, in via Donizetti with its beautiful mansions from different epochs, the Palazzo dell’Arciprete, designed by Isabello in 1520, the best example of a Renaissance mansion in the entire town.
The Torre del Gombito, 52 metres high, is a point of reference in the urban structure of the Città Alta and the restructuring and restoration that takes place today thanks to the inclusion of a hotel structure of importance like the GombitHotel, are an important intervention of integration between the cultural offer of the territory and tourism.
INTERIORS
Design made in Italy
The interiors of the project were entrusted to the designer Giò Pozzi, who elaborated a simple and linear space, of grand style that is able to compete with the ancient part both of the building and the urban context in which it is immersed.
It is true architecture of the essential that is the inspiration of the project: delicate colours and important but at the same time simple materials, with subtle tones aimed at welcoming and pure design.
The floor of the entrance is large in size with a slab of pacific grey, Brazilian stone measuring 110 x 90 cm. The seating in the entrance is also spacious and extends for 4 m, comfortable in tones and the rigour of the design. A transversal iron tape, of 35 cm, delineates the hall. Element of design and a play of citation with the historical external paving and typical of the nearby Piazza Vecchia which is thus recalled inside the tower. Of great effect and rigorous linearity is the desk in reception in white gloss resin of Gobbetto. A parallelepiped that stands out for the pure volume inside the powerful walls that form the reception environment.
The mixture of the ancient structure and contemporary design of the interiors is continuous and each of the spaces open to the public has a historical detail reinterpreted and knowingly exalted, like the room with Internet platform, the support table of which is made from a single block of stone or the corridor where original shelves from the thirteenth century have been restored. In the Tower Lounge with an original coffered ceiling, instead there is the original work of Steven Cavagna, whose books on the ceiling represent a material installation, rigorous, applied to the warmth of the wainscoting in white wood. Still by Steven Cavagna are the support tables in the hall, handmade with plaster and jute.
Many of the works that furnish the spaces of GombitHotel were created using materials recovered during the restructuring work on the ancient medieval tower that hosts the hotel. Screws, stones, iron and cables are the “showpieces” recovered during the work of cleaning out and upgrading of the edifice.
Also the 13 bedrooms in the hotel, in which we find frequent recollections of the linear geometry of the Tower, have been created with great care, with a choice of pure design, which dialogues pleasantly with the historical elements of the building.
Distributed on 4 floors, the rooms differ one from the other and the furnishings have been designed with the aim of absolute comfort. The colour schemes are again those of pale grey and white, on which more decisive colours such as green, orange and beetroot have been applied to enhance the original elements found in each environment.
In all of them a great passion emerges for the search for pure materials by the interior designer Giò Pozzi, which is found in the minimum details like the hand-made bed linen and the decorations chosen for each room.

STORIA DI UN EDIFICIO ANTICO
Nel cuore di Bergamo Alta GombitHotel gode di una collocazione privilegiata adiacente a una torre di epoca medioevale, la Torre del Gombito, edificata con scopi difensivi agli inizi del XII secolo. La Torre si trova nell’antico punto di incontro tra due vie romane: il cardo e il decumano. Da questo incrocio, detto compitum, bivio, crocicchio, deriva il nome della torre: Gombito, “gombet”, in dialetto, gomito in italiano. La torre mantenne la sua funzione difensiva fino al ‘500, quando venne convertita a usi civili. Nei secoli successivi la torre ebbe alterne fortune, ma fu protagonista nel 1849 dei movimenti risorgimentali che agitarono anche Bergamo: dalla sua sommità, i cittadini in rivolta spararono contro la torre della Rocca, presidiata dalle truppe austriache, le quali risposero minacciando l’abbattimento parziale dell’antica torre. Nel 1877 la torre, allora appartenente ai signori Alessandro Agliardi, Giovanni Arioli e Giovanni Gout, venne donata al Comune di Bergamo. Anche all’esterno della torre si respira ovunque un po’ di storia: ai suoi piedi si trova un antico lavatoio e, poco più avanti, in via Donizetti con i suoi bei palazzi di epoche diverse, il Palazzo dell’Arciprete, progettato dall’Isabello nel 1520, il migliore esempio di abitazione rinascimentale dell’intera città. La Torre del Gombito, alta 52 metri, è dunque un punto di riferimento nella struttura urbana della Città Alta e la ristrutturazione e la riqualificazione che, oggi avvengono grazie all’inserimento di una struttura alberghiera di rilievo come il GombitHotel, rappresentano un importante intervento di integrazione tral’offerta culturale del territorio e il turismo.
GLI INTERNI
Design made in Italy
Gli interni del progetto sono stati affidati alla designer Gio’ Pozzi, che ha elaborato uno spazio semplice e lineare, di grande stile e in grado di misurarsi sia con la parte antica dell’edificio sia del contesto urbano in cui si immerge.E’ una vera architettura dell’essenziale l’ispirazione del progetto: colori tenui e materiali importanti maallo stesso tempo semplici, dai toni morbidi, tesi all’accoglienza e al design puro. Di grande dimensione e’ il pavimento in entrata, con una lastra di pietra brasiliana pacific grey di cm110 x90. Ampia e’ anche la seduta in ingresso che si estende per 4 m, confortevole nei toni e nel rigoredel design. Una fettuccia in ferro, di 35cm, delinea trasversalmente la hall. Elemento di design e digioco di citazione con la pavimentazione esterna storica e tipica della vicina Piazza Vecchia che così viene richiamata all’interno dello stabile. Di grande effetto e linearità rigorosa, il bancone della reception in resina bianca opaca di Gobbetto. Un parallelepipedo che spicca per il volume puro all’interno delle mura potenti, che formano l’ambiente di accoglienza. La miscela tra struttura antica e design contemporaneo degli interni e’ continua e ognuno degli ambienti aperti al pubblico ha un dettaglio storico reinterpretato e sapientemente esaltato, come la sala con piattaforma Internet, il cui tavolo di appoggio e’ ricavato da un blocco di pietra unico o il corridoio dove sono state recuperate mensole originali del 1200. Nella Sala della Torre con un soffitto a cassettoni originali, campeggia invece l’opera originale di Steven Cavagna, i cui libri al soffitto rappresentano un’istallazione materica, rigorosa, applicata al calore della boiserie in legno bianca. Sempre di Steven Cavagna sono i tavolini di appoggio nella hall, realizzati a mano con gesso e juta. Molte delle opere che arredano gli spazi di GombitHotel sono state create utilizzando materiali recuperati durante i lavori di ristrutturazione dell’antica torre medioevale che ospita l’hotel. Viti, pietre, ferro e cavi sono i “pezzi forti” recuperati durante l’opera di ripulitura e riqualificazione dello stabile. Anche le 13 camere dell’hotel, in cui troviamo frequenti richiami alla geometria lineare della Torre, sono state realizzate con grande cura, con una scelta di design puro, che dialoga piacevolmente con gli elementi storici dell’edificio. Distribuite su 4 piani, le camere sono una diversa dall’altra e gli elementi di arredo sono stati disegnati all’insegna del comfort assoluto. I temi cromatici sono ancora quelli del grigio asfalto e del bianco, a cui sono stati applicati toni più decisi come il verde, l’arancio, il barbabietola, per valorizzare gli elementi originari ritrovati in ciascun ambiente. In tutte emerge la grande passione per la ricerca di materiali puri della interior designer Giò Pozzi, che si ritrova nei minimi dettagli come nella biancheria eseguita a mano e nelle decorazioni scelte per ciascuna stanza.
