THE ANCIENT PALACE SPADONI IN CADONEGA, VIANO
Borgo Gadonega Relais & Spa is one of the most ancient and important patrician dwelling in our territory. The Palace was the residence of the noble Spadoni family for many years. This family was related with cardinal Toschi, who in 1605 was nearly to be Pope. Moreover, Gianbattista Spadoni covered the role of chancellor for the Duke of Modena during the XIX century.
Some of our fireplaces still have the original family’s coat-of-arms graven on and today we use the same symbol as Borgo Cadoenga Relais & Spa’s LOGO.
The building stay in the oriental part of Viano and its tall towers overlook the surrounding countryside and the Tresinaro river. In fact, this historical building is characterized by two main house/towers.
Between XVII and XVIII century the rest of the palace was built around these two towers. The main tower shows some typical Middle Age features. Foe example you can see original defensive loopholes in some of our rooms.
The newest part of the building is the second tower, dates back to 1709 as you can see from an engraving on the wall where’s written “1709”.
Usually nobles used the highest part of the towers as dovecote and they put artificial nests into it. These nests made in terracotta still stay in the highest part of the building, where today stand our most luxury room: “La Piccionaia” that in fact means “pigeon nest”.

The rest of the building includes lounges, bed rooms and passages. We worked at these areas, trying to maintain the original and ancient features like strong durmast beams, oak ceiling, old paintings and even the old plaster.
On the ground floor there is a suggestive area that included wine cellars, rooms with wave for bread, laboratories and other functional zones connected with the kitchen. We carefully worked also on these places, exalting the wise constructive abilities and the wonderful walls in stone.
Here we keep some unique finds, like the “auspicious cup” decorated with flowers and other engraving. This should be, as per ancient traditions, a lucky charm stuff.
Like other patrician dwelling, Borgo Cadonega building has a domestic church with rich and colorful decorations in plaster dating ‘600 and some ‘700.
Into the complex of Cadonega Relais & Spa there is also a building that acted as guardian’s home with little stable and hen-house on the ground floor.
Today in that building stand our SPA, connected with the rest of the structure with an underground tunnel.
The main purpose of the renovation of this ancient Borgo was to combine the elegance and the beauty of history with the modern needs of the hospitality, trying to do of this unique structure a landmark in the Emilian high hotellerie scene.
Borgo Cadonega is located in a rare beauty landscape. In few time you can reach the castle of S. Maria di Querciola, Mud vulcanoes in Casola and Regnano, the naturalistic area of Mountain Duro, studied by the important scientist Lazzaro Spadoni, and other places.
All these places are reached by a functional net of footpaths, realized by the Italian Alpine Club.
