The Country Hotel Relais Monaco is an oasis of peace and tranquility, located few kilometers away from Treviso and about 40 from Venice.
The area of Treviso is an extraordinary mix of different landscapes, artistic and historical sites, natural beauties, museums, galleries, hospitality and fine cuisine, that enraptures the traveler and remains in the heart of those who get to know well this unique region.
From the harmonious plains, to the Prealps, from the fascinating Prosecco hills to Montello and the woods of Cansiglio, passing through the many picturesque towns and hamlets that make this territory a beautiful mosaic all to discover.
The rich artistic and cultural heritage everyone can admire today, finds its roots back up to the first paleolithic settlements, then to the Roman Empire and more recently with the Venetian Republic, the so-called Serenissima.
The many museums, churches, buildings and Villas scattered in the province are proof of this legacy with ancient cultures, that even today have a strong influence on the locals’ lifestyle.
THE HISTORY OF THE VILLA
The villa that houses Relais Monaco is situated in Ponzano Veneto, in the province of Treviso, along the ancient consular road ‘Postumia’.
It was first built in the early 1800s for the ancient and noble Persico family, native from Bergamo and consolidated to the Veneto aristocracy in 1685.
To enter the villa, guests drive on a long beautiful road, through a luxuriant vineyard, to arrive then in the wide courtyard. The architectural complex features all the characteristics of the typical venetian villa, so popular in the old times among Venetian noblemen.
Over the years the villa changed owners, from the noble Persico family to Count Guarnieri, whose last descendant, left alone, gave in to the persistence of the local gourmet chef Alfredo Beltrame, who transformed – in the 1960s – the villa into a refined hotel-restaurant and made it one of the most exclusive places in the area.
That was just the first venue of a famous chain known as ‘Toulà’ – a word from the dialect of Ampezzo – , with restaurants in Italy and overseas.
Back in 1965 then, because of its beauty, the villa has been chosen by the Italian movie director Pietro Germi, who decided to shoot a few scenes of “Signore & Signori” (English title The Birds, the Bees and the Italians) in our hotel. Watching the movie viewers can clearly recognize the hotel entry as well as the beautiful wooden beams of our restaurant roof. The movie stars great Italian actors such as Virna Lisi, Gastone Moschin, Alberto Lionello and Olga Villi. It gained popularity in all the nation, in fact it is recognized as an example of the “Commedia all’Italiana” (Italian-style Comedy). In 1965 the movie has been awarded as best movie at the 19th Cannes Festival winning the ‘Grand Prix’.
With the last ownership change, the villa was handed to the Benetton family, undergoing a major renovation and enlargement process, that has considerably modified the original structure, preserving though the historical nature of the building.
RELAIS MONACO TODAY
The 90’s renovation project was entrusted to Architect Tobia Scarpa, who developed two new wings united to the colonnade of the eastern side of the property, well integrated in the historical and natural context. On the opposite side, a new banqueting hall was built, a real winter garden as it is surrounded by wide glass walls on 3 sides, with a great view on the vast park; covered by a wooden vault with the shape of a keel of an overturned boat.
The southern facade, facing the courtyard, is embraced by two new low constructions that emphasize its beauty. An outdoor swimming pool was added in the park, which was also subject of a well-chosen requalification.
After all this restoration the hotel would eventually become Relais Monaco, a refined hotel with 79 rooms, including 17 suites and junior suites, a gourmet restaurant where you can enjoy the best regional delicacies and a conference and events center, consisting of different rooms able to accommodate up to 200 people.
On the outdoor terraces, furnished with lounge seats and rocking chairs, the view on the park is magnificent.
A fitness room and a brand new SPA – ready in spring 2016 – complete the services offered to guests.
